Launching STEAM Week at Ardscoil Phádraig, Granard

I was delighted to be invited by teacher, Marian Mulligan, to officially launch the school’s STEAM Week at Ardscoil Phádraig in Granard- one that celebrates Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics – and that encourages young people to think creatively, believe in themselves and embrace new possibilities.

Marian graciously later reflected that my opening talk connected with and touched the hundreds of students, staff, and parents in the school’s hall and helped set a powerful and positive tone for the entire week.

It was a privilege to spend time with such an engaged and enthusiastic school community. STEAM Week is about far more than projects or experiments; it is about helping students recognise the value of curiosity, resilience, collaboration and self-belief — skills that will serve them well whatever path they choose in life.

Reflecting on the impact of the launch, Marian noted how the sense of positivity and motivation carried through the school throughout the week. One moment she shared was particularly meaningful. Ardscoil Phádraig has an autism unit supporting 18 students, and one student in particular was deeply moved by hearing how I had managed to navigate and overcome many challenges throughout my business, political and personal life.

The warmth, encouragement and sense of shared purpose evident throughout the school was a credit to the leadership and dedication of Marian and the entire school community.

Initiatives like this highlight the importance of giving back, of taking time to inspire and uplift the next generation, and of creating environments where every young person feels seen, supported and capable of achieving their potential.
